TRS Bragging Rights Badge

Ebay presented this badge to me today, I love recognition, don't you?  Yes, I'm bragging.  I won't say that having an ecommerce business on ebay is easy; but its not difficult and it is personally rewarding.  I'm reaching my goals and the next milestone is Bronze Level Powerseller by the end of 2014.  Wish me luck!

Today I shipped a shirt to Madrid... yes Madrid.  And it didn't cost me any extra $$$.  I just shipped my usual method to the GSP location in Kentucky and they will take it from there.  Can it get any easier?  I doubt it.

Have a wonderful blessed day and weekend.

Where do I Get Inventory? What do I Sell? ... on eBay

The most popular question I see faced with any eBay seller by newbies is:
Where to get inventory?  Many times they want to know "What to buy", etc.  But you know? Every individual is different.  What I sell vs what you sell could be a complete opposite.  But here are a few spots I target to get inventory.

  • Thrift Stores (of all kinds)
  • Garage Sales - individual items, buyouts, etc.
  • Rummage Sales
  • Estate Sales
  • Around the House

This isn't anything new, you can find this list all over the internet.

What do I sell?

I sell new and gently used clothing, accessories, gifts and more.  That's my tag line.  I have surfed the internet for blogs, youtube, and picked up books giving me some very valuable information.  Brands are important.  Quality is important.  Do I make bad choices?  Of course, its all trial and error onsome items; that's why I try not to purchase to much of one thing or brand until I have tested it.  I am trying to move into more vintage products; but since I am at the beginning of the learning curve, I have to be cautious.  Antiques would be AWESOME; but those may be even harder for me to identify.

Have a beautiful, blessed day!

Beginners Guide to Using Ebay Shipping 9.12.2014 by Blondie's Boutique

This is a guide to help new sellers learn the most basic steps of using the eBay shipping program.
Now that your item is sold, how do you ship?  Well hopefully, you weighed and estimated delivery accurately before you listed your item.  That doesn't always happen, even with experienced sellers (like me).  I have learned enough over the past few months to get by.  When I offered to help a friend ship an item she had just sold I thought this would be a good opportunity to share this basic information.  This post is not for experienced sellers.  It is for those who have never shipped anything before; or have not shipped anything in a very long time.

Things you need:
Computer
Computer paper
Printer (with ink)

You should already have a Paypal account set up for ebay shipping to retrieve funds from.  If not; STOP, go back and take care of that first.

NOTE:  ALL SCREEN SHOTS HAVE BEEN EDITED TO PROTECT THE PRIVACY OF MY BUYER, AND MY HOME INFORMATION.

STEP ONE:  Once you have received notification that your item has been sold, look to the right of your "Awaiting Shipment" screen and select "Print Shipping Label"

STEP TWO:  You should see a screen similar to the one below.  You can choose which shipper you want to use; but that should have been done prior to listing your product.  Sometimes you can decide to upgrade if it is less expensive and you and your buyer has not specified exactly what shipper you will use.

STEP THREE:  After you have selected your carrier, you need to select the level of service you have previously determined, or as in my case I often upgrade to a higher level of service at no additional expense to my buyer.  i.e. if I have offered FREE Economy Shipping, and my item weighs 13 ounces or less; I ship USPS First Class Mail.  This server usually arrives to your buyer in 2 - 5 days (as shown in the picture below.

STEP FOUR:  You can choose the total weight of your item.  In this case my item weighed 7.2 lbs; so of course I rounded up to prevent any additional charges to my buyer.  In the diagram below you can see to the right, that my postage cost calculated to be $3.22.  My ebay discount of 20% was applied and the total amount due to ebay shipping is $2.59.

STEP FIVE:  Select the date you want to ship your package.  I often print my labels the night before, and after a certain hour, the mail date will indicate so.  If not, I can choose to mail "tomorrow" as shown in the picture below.

STEP SIX:  Get ready to purchase your postage.  Before you click that purchase button, decide whether you want the postage to display on the label.  I personally choose not to.  This allows me the flexibility of using any discounted funds for my overall shipping and handling expenses.  Example:  I purchase some of my supplies (i.e. poly bags, paper, ink, gas etc.)  This variance helps to keep me in business.  You can choose to keep those funds or to refund the difference to your buyer.  That is totally up to you.  In this case the difference paid to me vs paid for actual shipping is $1.06.  Ebay charges a percentage of your postage as a final value fee.  In most cases that's 10%. So I will pay approximately $0.37 in FVF; making the real variance about only $0.69.

STEP SEVEN:  Once you have selected "Purchase postage" you should see a screen similar to the one below.

STEP EIGHT:  Now its time to print your shipping label and packing slip.  See the instructions in the picture below.

STEP NINE:  Computers and printers vary, but I see the same basic print screen all of the time.
Select "Print" when you are ready.

There are different opinions about whether to include a packing slip with the order.  I almost always include a packing slip.  In my opinion that shows professionalism.  I also consider the fact that there may come a time when the shipping label is not legible.  How would the post office know where to send it or return it if there is no packing slip included.  I'm just sayin'.

STEP TEN:  Repeat STEP NINE:

And, there you have it.  A very basic, beginners guide to using ebay's shipping label program.  I'm sure there are many other blog posts, youtube videos, and such providing equal or better instructions.

So, this is just my little way of trying to help newcomers.  Good luck, and I welcome your comments.

Warm Regards,
Blondie

Business Related Things to Do When Internet Service is Down

As an on-line seller, I depend heavily on internet access.  Sometimes beyond our control the internet service provider has technical difficulties or as in the case this week; eBay was having server and mobile app issues.  So, rather than panicking, or thinking there isn't anything you can do to be productive; think about these things:

  1. Organize:  An organized inventory and work space can benefit in several ways.  It makes your life and business much more efficient and pleasing to the eye.  Clutter can cause anxiety, which can cause depression, which can cause clutter... its a vicious cycle.
  2. Straighten:  If you're organized, but things have kind of fallen over, slipped off, or whatever; take the time to straighten up your area.
  3. Iron/Press (clothing):  If you have items needing to be listed, take the time to iron or press garments for a more pleasing and professional look.  It also helps you find any flaws or defects you may have overlooked.
  4. Measure:  I admit, I sometimes forget to measure garments.  This is a very important step that isn't a good idea to overlook.  Take the time to measure and make notes to get your listings ready.
  5. Photograph:  Whether you use a state of the art digital camera, or a camera phone; this is a good time to take photographs of the items you have gotten ready in the above steps.
  6. Edit Photographs:  If you have photography editing software that doesn't require internet access, this is a good time to get that done.
  7. Write Listings in Word (to copy later):  This step explains itself.  If you don't have WORD, then Notepad will work just as well,  Just don't forget to save your work.

Warm Regards,
Blondie

Dog Days of Summer Slow Sales - Don't Give Up...

I've wondered over the last several days (about 2 weeks or so), why it appeared that my sales have declined.  This being August, and the last official full month of summer gives me a reason to believe why sales have declined a little.  Family vacations, many schools have started (including my school district).

So today, I stumbled on a way to see if some of my favorite fellow sellers have had the similar sales.  I figured out how to look up their sold listings to see how many they have sold over the past several days. Well it seems to be a pattern.  People much more experienced than I haven't sold a whole lot more than I; so I have to chalk it up to the time of year and season.  Fourth quarter just around the corner, and I anticipate a HUGE jump in sales.

I have selected some really nice new items for my ebay store that will make great gifts or additions to anyone's wardrobe and accessories.  Pricing on the items pictured below includes domestic shipping.

Cute, trendy handbags (purse or tote).... available in a variety of colors and style.  Four listed to date; with more coming as time allows.

Below are available in plus size only.  Open front animal print cardigan; great for Fall.

Dumpster Diving for FREE Shipping and Packing Supplies

Most people who sell on eBay and other sites are well aware of the free shipping supplies you can get from USPS.gov.  However, the free supplies are specifically targeted toward priority and/or expedited mail.  If you want to help save the earth and use recycled materials, a great source for shipping and packing materials are the great recycle dumpster in your area.  I actually have permission from the manager of a national retail store chain to take as much from "his" dumpster as I want.  As he put, he has to pay the bill, so anything I take out saves his company money.  So, periodically I drive by looking for certain size boxes, bubble wrap, and other things that can be used to make shipping more economical.

Get your boxes, and bubble wrap, as well as other packaging materials from your local recycle dumpster.... be sure to get permission if there are restrictions in your area.

Do you have any special FREE supply sources?  If so, please share with me and my readers.  We'd love to know.

Warm Regards,
Blondie

Why I Want to Become DEBT FREE!!

This is exactly the reason why I would like to work towards a debt free life.  I couldn't have said it better myself.

STOP THE INSANITY!

Using Hassle-free returns with eBay....

I had something returned, but unfortunately neither I nor the customer had ever gone through the return process.  I did it a little incorrectly by going directly into Paypal and issuing a refund. But today I did some research on eBay and found out it is as simple as it says.

Go to the link here to learn how to take advantage of hassle-free returns.

I offer hassle free returns on all qualified items.  I just hope eBay doesn't count it against me if someone simply changes their mind.  Since I just earned Top Rated Seller status, I really want to be able to maintain or grow that level of service.  Let me know what you think.

Top Rated Seller Rating August 21, 2014

Another milestone has been reached!  I can't say I've worked "HARD", but I have worked "SMART".
For me eBay sales is work but it isn't necessarily hard or difficult work.  Sure there are several steps to listing products...

  • sourcing
  • researching
  • photographing
  • listing
  • managing listings/inventory
  • shipping

and it consumes a significant amount of time.  Anyone can do it, and with today's smart phones its even easier.

I'm loving it and even with a full time job, I've managed to be awarded Top Rated Seller rating as of today.  Holding on to that level is the next challenge.  So now comes the decision of whether to upgrade from a Basic store to a Premium store.  A little more monthly investment; but more FREE listings (ok, technically I think I'm paying for them).  The original plan was to upgrade in January; but perhaps sooner would be a good idea.

Are 30 Day Listings a Good Idea?

I'm trying to spend more time on new items, than re-listing items that don't sell within the standard 7 day listing.  Therefore, instead of setting automation rules, I thought "ok, I'll try BIN (buy it now) listings for 30 days". I've listened to numerous youtube videos and read several blogs who seem to have success with this strategy.  I'm not sure yet if its a good idea yet or not.  Sales seem to have slowed; but I'm not certain if it is because of the time of year, or people are waiting for it to get closer to its end date.  I have the basic store, and trying to keep my listings around 150 for the month is a little tight when unsold items re-list every 7 days.

So, the questions to my followers are:

  1. Are 30 Day Listings a Good Idea?
  2. How are your summer sales (particularly August)?
  3. How much time should I give 30 day listings a chance before I revert back to 7 day listings?

Stretched a Little Thin.... - Support your bloggers, Follow, Like, Share

Hello friends and followers,

Well, today I tried to get caught up reading some of the blogs I enjoy reading.  There seems to be a common theme right now.  As working parents, it is often very difficult to pursue a dream of owning your own business while you still have a mortgage, car payment, and children to care for and a full time job.  I'm one of those people as well.  I have always wanted my own store.  I've tried and given up long before failure was a reality.  Why did I give up?  I got tired, I was stretched to thin.  For almost 10 years now I've been a single parent raising two children on my day job.  While I'm one of the fortunate ones who manages to stay afloat; there isn't a lot of money for extras.  Their father has always been involved in their lives; but we decided on joint custody with no child support.  So, in support of the fellow dreamers out there, I am going to share their posts here.

Check out Serena at Thrift Diving.  I met Serena briefly at Haven Conference 2014; and I've been reading her blog for almost 2 years.  She is a strong woman with perseverance.  I ask you to show your support by following and reading her blog and her youtube channel.

Next is Donna at Funky Junk Interiors.  Who gives some great advice on how to move to your dream job while not giving up your day job.  You can see her post here.

I haven't given up my dream completely; I've just re-evaluated how to go about it.  So, if you've read other posts in the past 6 months; you know I have an eBay store.  Since the thrift store booth was not profitable, I decided to pull out at the end of this month and focus on my eBay store.

Well, I guess that's enough for today.  Keep up the great work ladies and gents, and have a wonderful blessed day.

DREAMS CAN COME TRUE, ESPECIALLY IF WE ALL HELP ONE ANOTHER!

New to eBay? - Advice for New Buyers

Ebay is a wonderful outlet of businesses filled with all kinds of merchandise.  When a person first signs up as an ebay buyer; their feedback score starts at zero (0).  I've had a few buyers with 0 and 1 feedback scores and I have no problem welcoming them to my store and to eBay.  I mean, I started at zero too.  I wonder however, if some don't pay attention to the store policies or rules which will vary by seller.  One of the most important ones is:  Payment Terms.  Some sellers have 2 day payment terms, some give you more time.  So, just one word of advice to new eBay buyers - be sure to check the seller's policy on payment terms.

The second word of advice to new buyers is to build your feedback score by purchasing low priced/low shipping cost items.  Be sure to pay promptly and the result will more than likely be positive feedback which will build as more purchases are made.

What eBay Seller I Follow Most

Hello friends,

I hope everyone is having a good week.  The weekend is almost here and it will be time to get busy picking and listing.  Since I work a full time job; my picking days are limited primarily to weekends.  During my non-picking time I research products and follow and other successful sellers.  One of my favorites is Danna Crawford.  I hope she doesn't mind that I share this info.  Her youtube videos have really influenced my ebay business.

Projected Seller Level - Top Rated!

I am so very excited to get and share this news.  I've looked high and low for quality products to offer in my eBay store at affordable prices.  Its looking like my goal of achieving Top Rated seller level is just around the corner.
I've been rethinking the revenue channels I am currently involved in; and have decided to remove Blondie's Boutique from thrift store front.  My time, knowledge, and effort will be dedicated to the revenue channel that is working for me.; and that is EBAY!

Collectors Weekly Fashion Men's Clothing - Ebay Auctions List

This may be a small accomplishment by some standards, but its HUGE to me.  I get a weekly update from "Collector's Weekly" of the top 40 eBay vintage auctions; while this shirt is NOT in the top 40; when I filtered by brand; it came up on the list.  This made my day, week, weekend!  How awesome is this?

If I received your business card at Haven Conference, keep an eye out for my like or follow (if it is/was on your card, or directed from your blog).

Blondie's Boutique Complimented

I don't usually toot my own horn, but I am so proud of this compliment that I had to share.

Below copied from the listing referenced - identity removed for privacy.

Q: Dear Seller, Please, could you provide a rating on this shirt in regards to machine wash fading...10 being the deepest, most vivid store bought read, and 1 representing the greatest amount of fading. Please share any other issues aside from the fading question posed above...stains which have matted the corduroy , button holes which have been stretched out due to normal use, fraying to any of the hems on shirt trails or cuffs, all original buttons, etc. Many, many thanks!Jul-01-14
A: Below is Blondie's Boutique's opinion of the garment referenced. Please note seller and prospective buyer may not share the same opinion. As owner and operator of Blondie's Boutique I have experience in retail sales outside of ebay as a former Department Head of Infant's & Children's Wear from a now closed department store. Garment shows little fading. On a scale of 1 (being the greatest amount of fading) to 10 being the least amount: I would rate this as an 8-9. The shade of red is deep and rich. A few "loose" threads around some button holes, which is normal and may be factory results. All buttons are original and accounted for. No fraying of seams. No stains. Corduroy may have flattened somewhat in fold areas due to storage. Shirt is in very good to excellent shape. Good luck if you choose to bid. Regards, Blondie

After I sent the response to the question - here is what the prospective buyer replied

"Dear Blondie's Boutique,
We are truly grateful for your time and effort in answering our questions! You're obviously a professional and we appreciate your being thorough! Blessings!"

I do consider myself a professional, this compliment means so much to me. The prospective buyer bid on the item, and it will end in a day or two.

Many Blessings,
Blondie

Denim Days

When did designer jeans become fashionable?  According to Decades of Beauty The Changing Image of Women 1890's - 1990's  by Kate Mulvey & Melissa Richards, it was in the 1970's.  Styles come and go; but denim is a trend that is here to stay.  Below I show you some variations of this well loved garment.

Lets go Hawaiian.... Shirts that is

Aloha!

I hear a lot about Hawaiian shirts in a facebook group I am a member of.... So, I thought I would share a few pictures of the nice shirts I found while thrifting.  Some are sold and some are still in my eBay store.
I don't usually list items as Vintage; simply because I'm not 100% certain what IS vintage and what IS NOT.

Brand:  Island Shores
Brand:  Boca Classics

Brand:  A[x]ist

Brand:  A[x]ist

Brand:  Puritan - I love the swordfish on this one.
So, what's your take on Hawaiian shirts?

eBay Milestone; $1000 + in Sales

My first goal towards eBay's top seller status will be reached shortly.  Sales paid to date are $993.07 with $77.75 ending today; for a total of $1,068.82.  I would provide a screen shot; but they usually turn out really small.  Number of sales:  76 paid + 4 ending today; for a total of 80.  This includes international orders; which do not count toward the 100 goal.

Now, I want to thank all of those friends who have been supportive of this business venture.

Bargains for Blondie's Boutique

The past couple of weeks; I found great bargains at the store where I have my booth.  In the above picture you see a nice rolling case that I will be using when I attend the Haven Conference next month.  I picked it up at 50% off the already low price of $9.99.  What an awesome deal!

I've been eyeing the plus size dress form for a couple of months.  The owners of the thrift store aka Fabulous Finds for your Heart and Home were having 25% off; so I finally bought it.  It will come in handy when I photograph plus sized clothing for my eBay store.

What kind of great deals have you come across lately?

What is Vintage? An interesting Article

As I continue to find more product to list in my eBay Store, research is an important aspect to provide the best description and price possible.  So when I cam across this article written a year ago, I began to feel a little old.  Since I grew up in the late 70's, this was a shock.  I hope you enjoy this article.

BTW: I may still have stuff in my closet from the 90's... not sure; but I might.

The 90's are Now Officially Vintage

Blondie's Boutique - Booth Update

A lot of work, but a fun day on Saturday, May 31 - relocating my booth into another space.  I am still working on the layout with more attractive display of merchandise.  I welcome suggestions from my readers. What draws you into a booth?

Right - repainted furniture, clothing, stuffed animals etc.

My son's trumpet - used, not abused.

Fashion jewelry starting at 99 cents

Left - display case etc.
I would love to spend more time writing my blog.  Between a full time job, this booth, my eBay sales, and a family; not a lot of time left for writing.  Have a blessed day.

Detailed Seller Rating - For Blondie's Boutique - A New Milestone Reached

Folks who sells on eBay, know you must have a minimum of 10 DSR ratings before they become visible on your Seller Dashboard.  I'm very happy to say, I have finally reached that milestone.  I'm also proud to provide world class service to my clients.

The majority of products I offer are thrifted from various sources such as garage sales, rummage sales (my favorite), thrift stores, and closet or garage sale buys.  Not everything is a high-end brand; but I make it my goal and standard procedure to offer items that are free of stains, tears, rips, or holes... or any other damage.

I tried to make the picture below larger; but I still struggle with some technological skills (or lack there-of).

I want to thank all of those folks who follow my blog(s) and those who just happen to stop by.

Thank you all and God Bless!

Happy Blog-iversary to Me

It has been so much fun blogging for the past year.  Yep, I can't believe its been a whole year.  I have two blogs now; and www.dbablondiesboutique.blogspot.com is getting more of my attention than the other blog. Since I decided to go back into business for myself, I just haven't had a lot of time to write two blogs.  I miss doing furniture makeovers; but my time has been spent getting product ready for the thrift store booth and eBay.  I hope you will continue to visit my blog(s).  Have a wonderful week!

High End Coats Coming Soon to Blondie's Boutique

No pictures available at the moment; but I just struck a deal on 5 high end coats (jackets).

So... my questions are:

  1. Who buys coats on-line in the summertime?
  2. Should I post them; or hold on to them until late Summer early Fall?
